Are you in dire need of your Bank Verification Number (BVN) to process an online transaction in Nigeria, open a new local bank account and link them together, etc. You don’t have to fret as you can easily check your BVN from the comfort of your home using an Android smartphone, iPhone or the popular Nokia Torchlight phone.
In the past, you can only check your BVN by visiting any of your bank branch but the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intervened and partnered with Nigerian mobile network providers such as MTN, 9Mobile, Airtel and Glo to allow customers to check their BVN.
What is Bank Verification Number (BVN)?
The Bank Verification Number (sometimes shortened as BVN) is simply a centralized biometric identification system for the banking industry in Nigeria. It was initiated by The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through the Banker’ Committee and adopted by ALL the Nigerian banks. They include Access Bank, Diamond Bank, Fidelity Bank, First City Monument Bank, First Bank of Nigeria, Guaranty Trust Bank, Skye Bank, Union Bank of Nigeria, United Bank for Africa, Zenith Bank etc. You can see the full list of Nigeria banks as the above is not exhaustive. Anyways, the BVN was launched in Nigeria on February 14, 2014.
When you visit the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) website, it conveys that over 34 million+ has enrolled for their BVN.
What is the purpose of the BVN and its benefits?
Simple and straight to the point.
BVN makes it possible for a unique identity to be given to customers and is used across the Nigerian Banking Industry. These removes the monopoly for it to be specifically applicable to one bank as the number can be verified by all the banks. The BVN helps protect customers’ bank accounts from unauthorized access, resolves any identity theft, improve and standardize banking operations across Nigeria.
The best part is that the BVN given to customers is unique, and accepted across ALL Nigerian Banks as a means of identification.
How to check BVN on mobile phone via USSD code: MTN, 9Mobile, Airtel and Glo
Note: The mobile phone number you want to use to check your Bank Verification Number (BVN) must be associated with your bank account.
What it means is that if you opened your bank account and the phone number you entered when opening the account is MTN, you have to use that particular number to access the BVN else it won’t work.
Dial *565*0# from your mobile phone and the BVN number associated with that particular phone will be shown or sent as message to you.
